To note, the show Futurama is loosely based on the late 70's early
80's show Buck Rogers, with the same concept of a 20th century man
frozen for 500-1000 years. In the show Buck Rogers, the uniforms also
feature an Earth flag that is essentially a US flag with an Earth in
the star field instead of stars. However, the stripes on the Buck
Rogers Earth flag seem to zig-zag slightly.

Hmm. I don't remember seeing this at all, but I only saw about a third of the episodes, so I guess it figures. The series wasn't very clear about its political setting, and featured two overlapping, indistinct authorities. Quoting Wikipedia:
Not much can be said with certainty about the nature of the Earth's government. It is plausible, but speculative, to assume that the 'Federation' refers to the city-states of Earth such as New Chicago, New Detroit, etc, and is thus the formal government of the planet Earth, and that the 'Alliance' is Earth plus its off-world possessions, colonies, etc.Eugene Ipavec, 22 February 2008
